This is the time of the year that I DREAD... the beginning of Daylight Savings Time and therefore the loss of a precious hour of sleep. With sleep majorly on my brain I start to notice things. Scrolling through my emails, social media feed, online ads - I see a lot of headlines that make me say "huh, what?!?" Everything from fad diets to the new "It" vitamins or face cream seem to create a buzz... now the headline that 'brands are tapping into the sleep-as-a-luxury trend'. Not only that, corporations are jumping on the bandwagon to sell us every sort of gadget, app, serum, oil, and supplement to help us get there...
I have to admit, I'm not surprised. According to the CDC, Short Sleep (defined as less that 7 hours of sleep in a 24 hr period) significantly increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and even asthma. Furthermore, a large majority (varies by geography and demographic - approx. 28-45%) of American adults fall into the Short Sleep category. That's an enormous amount of grown adults who are regularly sleep deprived!
Sleep is no luxury. It's a critical part of your physical and mental health and should be treated as such. I have made a concerted effort over the past few months to treat is as a non-negotiable part of my self-care even when it would be so much easier to stay up late and be 'productive'. As a mother of two small children, let me tell you, I get it folks. There are are times when 7 hrs (or even 2 consecutive hours) just isn't in the cards. For all of the other times I am giving you my tips to bullet proof your bedtime rituals to ensure peaceful slumber.
