I have been eyeing Beauty Heroes beauty discovery box for quite a while. As a somewhat reformed subscription box addict, I have been oh-so-good at resisting...until now that is. I finally caved and joined!
What is Beauty Heroes?
Beauty Heroes is a clean, non-toxic, green/organic/natural beauty box that is delivered straight to you each month. It is carefully curated to make sure that the products included only are the best of the best. Every month is a little bit different- the items included could be skincare, body care, or hair care. Each month you receive a beautifully curated clean beauty product "hero" (full size) and an accompanying "sidekick" product (could be travel or full size). The best part? The box is only $39 per month and the value is usually $100+. That's amazing! I don't know how they do it!
Members also receive 15% off in the Beauty Heroes online shop.
How does it work?
Basically you choose your subscription length: 3,6, or 12 months (discounts on longer subs). Your box is delivered each month and you get to discover something new and wonderful! Easy peasy!
The June Discoveries
I was thrilled that June was a 'new to me' brand that I had never tried or heard of : Honua Skincare. I was happy to learn that the founder, Kapua Browning, is a fellow esthetician who's created the line to blend modern scientific/technological advances with the traditional healing practices of Hawaii.
The "hero" product this month was Honua Skincare's Aloha Youth Serum. One whiff and I was instantly transported to summer, sun, beach, and Hawaii! The combination of the CO2 extracted hibiscus, ylang ylang, and rose hydrosol form a gorgeous island bouquet that not only smells amazing but also contains tons of antioxidants.
This vitalized and organic coconut water based serum is a milky, creamy color and glides on smoothly and evenly. (Hint: Apply it on freshly cleansed skin while your skin is still slightly damp for best results.)
The Aloha Youth Serum is also brimming with 'hero' ingredients! Turmeric (also brightens skin) and kava kava are revered for their anti-inflammatory properties. The rose hydrosol and aloe are lightly hydrating and assist in strengthening the skin. Tamanu oil provides some natural UV protection while preventing dehydration as well.
My skin soaked this up in no time so if you try it remember- less is more. A little goes a long way!
Full Ingredient List:
Pure Vitalized Water (Aqua), Organic Coconus (Cocos nucifera) Water, Organic Aloe Vera Gel (Aloe barbadensis), Organic Rose (Rosa damascene) Hydrosol, Organic ‘Awa CO2 (Piper Methysticum), Hibiscus CO2 (Hibiscus Sabdarifffa), ‘Ōlena CO2 (Curcuma Longa), Hops CO2 (Humulus Lupulus), Organic Herbal Infusions of Noni (Morinda citrifolia), Cacao (Theobroma Cacao), 'Ōlena(Curcuma Longa), Comfrey Root & Leaf (Symphytum Officinale), Horsetail (Equisetum Arvense) in Kukui Nut (Aleurites Moluccans), Kamani (Calophyllum inophyllum) & Chia Seed (Salvia hispanica) Oils, Organic Lecithin, Ylang Ylang (Canaga Odorata), Organic Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Antioxidant, Vitamin E, Grapefruit See Extract (Citrus Paradisi)
Every ingredient in this serum is jam packed with phytonutrients, anti-oxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents. It is also light enough to be paired with a moisturizer or facial oil on top for dryer skin types. My friends with more oil-rich skin may be able to use this as a light hydrator and just add sunscreen to finish. Perfect for summer exposed skin!
I was super impressed with the high amount of CO2 extracted ingredients: hibiscus, turmeric ('Olena'), kava kava ('awa'), hops, and grapefruit seed extract. Read more about CO2 extraction here. CO2 extraction is highly regarded as a far superior extraction method (and very expensive!) so I was excited to see it applied in abundance here. A potent, high quality product begins with ingredient integrity!
I really enjoyed this serum. It was a great discovery!
The "sidekick" this month was the Olena Beauty Oil. Olena, Hawaiian turmeric, is known for it's intensely anti-inflammatory properties. I was pleased to see that the oil was only golden in color, not Big Bird yellow like I was expecting.
Some of the hero ingredients include:
Kukui Nut and Kamani Oils - traditional Hawaiian oils that provide natural sun protection, provides deep hydration, heal damaged skin, soothe sensitivities, and are packed with anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids
‘Ōlena - Hawaiian turmeric - anti-inflammatory, anti-aging properties, and high in anti-oxidants
Noni- anti-inflammatory, hydrates and seals in moisture, and high in skin protecting Vitamin C
Full Ingredient List:
Organic & Wildcrafted Herbal Oil Infusions of ‘Ōlena (Curcuma long), Noni (Morinda citrifolia) & Cacao (Theobroma cacao) in Kukui Nut (Aleurites moluccans) and Kamani (Calophyllum inophyllum), & Chia Seed (Salvia hispanica), Organic Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) Antioxidant
This beauty oil felt fantastic going on but I had to get used to the aroma. The oils have a very distinct aroma that is not as flowery as the serum but not unpleasant. Just different. It absorbed well and gave my skin a nice healthy island type glow so I didn't think twice about it!
This serum/oil combo is perfect for the summer and for humid climates. I still felt a little dry on low humidity days but when the steaminess climbed- it was perfect! This is a well-rounded pairing and it should work beautifully for most skin types.
Are you a member of Beauty Heroes? What did you think of this months discovery? You can't beat this deal if you want to discover new, reputable brands with clean ingredients. You can still get the June box if you subscribe before June 20th!
