Summer is in full swing and I am loving it! The sun, sand, and warm balmy sea air is both great for the soul but so hard on your skin. I have always found that my body has the hardest time adjusting to the constant assault of UV, pool/ocean water, and long hours of sweating outside. It's a constant challenge to remove the many layers of mineral sunscreen and dirt while keeping the skin balanced and hydrated. Right?!?
With all of this in mind, I was pretty excited to discover this body wash from Saison (French for "season") - a San Fransisco based skin/bodycare company that bases it's formulations on the different North American seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter).
Every product is certified vegan and cruelty-free from PETA and free from: petrochemicals, parabens, silicones, phthalates, sulfates, glycols, PEGs, DEA, MEA, TEA, triclosan, synthetic fragrances, colors or dyes. I also love that they seem to go the extra 'green' mile with their packaging. You are able to recycle all Saison containers either at a local recycling facility or in-house in San Francisco. They even have instructions on how to 'reset' their recyclable airless pump bottles so that you can refill them with anything you choose. Too cool! I can't wait to try that out!
I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried the Rebirth Body Butter by Beauty in the Raw. I have to be honest- the butter did NOT look appealing at all when I first opened it. Maybe it melted in transit, maybe that's just how it looks but my first impression was, well...not good. However, my mama always taught me not to "judge a book by it's cover" so I took one inhalation of the inviting aroma and decided to give it a go!
I am so glad that I did. What this butter lacked in esthetics it makes up for in efficacy. I scooped out a nickel sized amount and that covered my entire body. This golden body butter is thick and 'whipped' so it has an interesting, almost bubbly texture (at least mine did!). You apply it on freshly damp skin to seal in water hydration and to make sure that it penetrates. Follow the directions and apply directly on straight-out-of-the-shower wet skin and it goes on like a dream. It soaks in just enough to feel deeply hydrating but not so much that it leaves the skin surface feeling devoid of a layer of protection. I do recommend waiting a few minutes after application to ensure that it does fully absorb before getting dressed to avoid any oil transfer onto your clothing or bedding.
As for the ingredients, check them out below! This small batch formula is cruelty-free, vegan, non-GMO, contains no artificial fragrance, preservatives, fillers, or water, and is raw. Chock full of skin loving, certified organic butters/oils like mango seed, shea, hokum, avocado, and pumpkin. The unrefined nature of this product helps to ensure that the plants' antioxidants and phytochemical remain active until you use it. The aroma was light and fresh yet dissipated quickly. It smelled like lavender to me!
This is a great product for the prevention and healing of dry skin. It made a HUGE difference in my parched legs and was especially beneficial after shaving- leaving my skin smooth with a subtle sheen. I need all the help I can get during the summer!
FYI- the Rebirth Body Butter is currently on sale as of the writing of this post AND Beauty In The Raw is offering an additional 15% OFF the sale price with Code LiveLoveSkincare15off . Pick one up before it ends!

Update: It's officially been over a year of using the Lumion Oxygen Mist and I am STILL in love with it (and the accompanying Lumion Oxygen Serum). I have been using it every.single.day here this summer in the hot, humid coast of Guanacaste, Costa Rica and my skin has been sailing through. No greasiness, no congestion, no breakouts. I mist it on at least 3X per day to keep my skin calm and clean-feeling. Definitely a travel must-have for the summer! ORANGEBLOSSOM15 will still get you 15% OFF your entire Lumion Skin order HERE!
The LUMIONskin Mist from Lumion is a unique skin mist that I discovered this year at IBE Dallas 2017 (Indie Beauty Expo Dallas).
This mist is essentially a unique solution of Hypochlorous Acid and sea salts designed to cleanse/disinfect the skin (awesome for breakouts). Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL) is created when a strong electrical current passes through salt water. It is created in nature when lightening hits the ocean but can be created in a lab as well.
HOCL was originally used in WWI to help wounded soldiers heal more quickly. The problem? The solutions they created were only stable for an hour or so. Fast forward to modern day...
*This stuff is so good that I just had to update the review. The discount code is still good so use ORANGEBLOSSOM15 for 15% OFF your order at Lumion Skin !
Update: I have now been using this serum (and the accompanying Lumion Mist) for over a year now. They are always my go-to products whenever I begin to break out, skin feels congested, or oil production increases (HELLO summertime!). They drastically reduce the time it takes for current breakouts to heal, reduces the number of blemishes, and balances my oil production without overdrying. I keep these in my gym bag, beach bag, and I even have packed full sizes on my summer trip this year to Costa Rica. If you have reactive (or blemish-prone) skin during the summer then these are absolute must haves!
Lumion Skin is another line that I discovered at the Indie Beauty Expo in Dallas this year. Their premise is simple- 2 products that are designed to heal the skin, reduce blemishes, redness, the signs of aging, and to soothe irritated skin. Healthy aging of the skin without the use of parabens, fragrance, phthalates, sulfates, gluten, dairy, or alcohols.
I tried both products out (you can read my in depth review on Lumion Mist here) and after a summer of using the Oxygen Serum I can tell you what I've found!
If you're reading this blog then I think it's safe to say that you LOVE discovering new beauty brands- especially non-toxic + clean brands! Meet HelloBeni.com - a new website that mixes social media + indie beauty recommendations that are hand-selected especially for you based on a personalized skin care quiz you take online.
How it works:
1. You take your skincare quiz
2. The site's innovative algorithm takes your answers and pairs product/brand suggestions for you based on your answers.
3. Ask the "Community" for recommendations and receive suggestions from both indie brands and other customers
4. You can then shop straight from the HelloBeni.com online store!
So easy and a great way to discover new beauty must-haves from 'under the radar' beauty brands.
The current brand list is small but quickly growing (see the current partnering brands HERE) and places an emphasis on non-toxic indie (independent) brands.
This is a fantastic way for emerging brands (or even more established veterans) to:
#1 Be introduced directly to potential consumers through a skincare/bodycare questionnaire (brand/product recommendations are made based on your answers) and
#2 interact directly with their customers through a 'community' forum where the customer can ask for specific recommendations.
The "Community" aspect is great since brands can directly answer any product questions and fellow HelloBeni users can chime in if they have suggestions as well. Basically this ingenious little site makes it possible for the consumer to receive personalized product recommendations from multiple brands at once and then immediately purchase the recommended products in one easy online shop.
For example: You could post: "I am looking for a synthetic fragrance-free body wash" or "I need a vegan-friendly face oil for blemish-prone skin" and you might get several brands responding with their own variation on :" We have ____ that is fantastic for <insert consumer request here>. Here's a little bit about the product...".
HelloBeni.com also provides information on where you can experience each brand in person (i.e. a local store, spa, or boutique). Incredibly helpful!
I think this site is a great way to learn about new up-and-coming brands and I really love that the ingredient decks are listed as well. Note: Make sure to check each ingredient deck as everyone has their own idea of what clean/non-toxic beauty is.
Did it work?
It did! I discovered a new-to-me brand while perusing the site. Have you heard of Saison ? This San Francisco-born indie beauty company creates skin + body care that is based on the natural variations in our North American seasons. Their collections: Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, and some all season products are plant-based, vegan, and use organic ingredients whenever possible. I tried out the Summer Body Wash and I LOVE it!
I think the website has enormous potential. I loved the ability to receive feedback from multiple sources (multiple brands + other users) in an easy-to-use site and I am eager to see more brands added for more variety as well. This is one start-up that I'll keep my eye on for sure!
Have you tried HelloBeni.com? What did you think? What did you discover?

It's no secret that I am quite the green beauty box addict (check out my IG account for proof!). My absolute favorites include Maple Blume, Boxwalla, Art of Organics, Petit Vour , and of course, The Beauty Heroes Discovery Box.
Lately, I've been really considering the "Less is More" and "Use Less, Love More" ethos behind most green, indie beauty brands (and in particular, Beauty Heroes founder, Jeannie Jarnot). It is an idea that I preach on a daily basis as a green esthetician and spa owner. I want my guests to truly love and experience each of their purchases. I want their serums to bring relaxation and their masking treatments to be a time to indulge in a moment of quiet reflection. I also want this for myself. More often than not, I find myself slapping them on and hope that they erase my hyperpigmented sun spots. Not exactly the effect I was looking for.
We choose small, independent, and green beauty brands for a reason. We love them for their 'slow beauty' methods - vetted ingredients, eco-conscious awareness, individualized attention (I mean, I sent an IG message to SkinOwl and Annie, the owner, responded herself!), and their focus on improving your life through self-love and self-care.
However, despite the best of intentions, the crazy feeding frenzy of modern American culture still seeps into even the most noble of brands (remember the crazy Black Friday/Holiday sales and deals that seemed to go on and on and on...?). I LOVE a great deal but inevitably I end up purchasing too many products that I didn't really need and falling into 'out with the old, in with the new' pitfall.
That is why I have cancelled all of my beloved beauty box subscriptions as apart of my New Year's Detox. Yep, all of the brands that I mentioned at the top (except Petit Vour as I purchased a year subscription) are on the chopping block for at least a few months. The struggle is REAL y'all- did you see the December Beauty Heroes box?!? Major FOMO! Thank goodness January's box included two Maya Chia products that I already have ( and they are GOOD - The Eye Achiever and The Super Blend) or I surely would have caved!
Needless to say, I was thrilled to read the latest Beauty Heroes email. I was already working on this blog post and thinking, "Ugh. I hope they don't take any offense to this post". Imagine my smile to read: "The top reasons our subscribers cancel is because they have too much product, and to that we say Bravo! We hear it all the time and we applaud you for taking a break from our service when needed, and coming back when you are ready."(Jeannie Jarnot) I couldn't have said it better myself!
So, thank you to all of the gorgeous beauty box mavens who bring me so much excitement, anticipation, and sensory joy with all of the new beauty discoveries. You make it so hard to take a break but I know it won't be long before I am back in full force. However, for now I'm choosing to consciously revel in the the green luxury that you have sent me over the past year.
Happy 2018! Well, this post was supposed to begin as : "2018 is nearly here and the usual thoughts have entered my head. What can I do to lead a healthier, better life in the New Year?" . Well, what happened? The flu happened! Ugh! So here we are- almost into February and I'm committed more than ever to increasing my immunity, flushing my body of unwanted/needed substances, and making sustainable improvements to my health.
As for 2018 resolutions? The usual suspects immediately come to mind: exercise more, meditate regularly, drink more water (and less, um, adult beverages), less sugar, more veggies... the list could go on forever! Am I right?!?
Well, I have decided that 2018 is going to be the year of lymphatic flow! To detox my body by enhancing its innate healing abilities. No crazy diets, exercise regimens, or cutting all of the fun out of my life. How do I plan on accomplishing this? Here are my top 6 lifestyle tweaks to get my chi moving!
This time of the year is always a little (or a lot) CRAZY. There are family obligations, parties, and everyone is going a million miles an hour. Sometimes you just need to put on the breaks, take a little time-out for some mindful, healthy self-care and chill time!
2017 is the year that I've completely embraced the "Less is More" + "Quality Over Quantity" skin care philosophies. If something doesn't make the cut (or simply doesn't work for me)- it's out. I pass it on to eagerly awaiting friends/family as to not waste. Read on for a curated selection of only the best!
This month I am sharing my current luxurious self-care obsessions that are seriously getting me through the insanity. Don't get me wrong, this is my absolute FAVORITE time of the year but even Mom needs to recharge to make it through!
Read on for the details on some of my most treasured discoveries!
Now that the summer is REALLY over, we can take a moment to sob into our Pumpkin Spice lattes and get down to prepping our skin for the winter holidays. Yes, 3 months of fun in the sun will leave you with friendly reminders (aka- uneven skin, hyperpigmentation) that there is a price to be paid for days lounging by the pool. It's ok! I've got you covered with the very best in green beauty to banish those spots before you can say "Trick or Treat"!
